Health Assured Review 2026: Is This Employee Assistance Programme Right for You?

banner

19 Minutes Read

Health Assured is the UK and Ireland’s largest independent Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) provider. It offers a 24/7 confidential support line, in-house counsellors, legal and financial advice, and the Wisdom wellbeing app, a package built to help employers fulfil their duty of care.

A note on accuracy. This article draws on publicly available information, sourced and linked throughout, and reflects our understanding as at 13 August 2026. Providers named here, and anyone who has used these services, are welcome to flag anything inaccurate or out of date at hello@karaconnect.com. We review every request and update where appropriate.

This comparison is published by Kara Connect, which offers an alternative employee wellbeing service to the provider reviewed here.

To create this Health Assured review, we examined the platform in detail. We believe it’s the right choice if:

– You need a traditional, full-service EAP with bundled legal and financial advice-
– You want 24/7/365 crisis support staffed by in-house counsellors
– You’re looking for an established provider with wide reach
– You need occupational health services alongside mental health support

However, Health Assured might not be the best choice if:

– You want a wellbeing benefit where every employee can book directly, with no triage
– You want bookable 1:1 specialists
– You want employees to choose their own practitioner without a prior triage step

In this case, you should consider Kara Connect: a digital employee wellbeing platform built on what it calls the Nordic Model of Care. Instead of a triage-based support line, Kara Connect gives each client organisation a customised Wellbeing Hub (a curated directory of 40–70 selected professionals from a network of over 3,000 vetted practitioners across 60+ specialties).

With Kara Connect, employees book directly with the practitioner they choose. No assessment step before booking, and no need to explain their situation twice. Sessions are typically available within 48 hours.

Kara Connect reports overall engagement averaging around 23%, with 15%+ of employees booking 1:1 sessions with professionals (Kara Connect client data, as reported by Enterprise Times, May 2025), compared with the 1.8–2.6% utilisation typical of traditional EAPs.

We’ve included a detailed look at Kara Connect at the end of this Health Assured review, as the leading alternative for organisations seeking higher engagement, broader coverage, and a stronger trust foundation. If you’re ready to explore it, you can set up a free Starter Hub here.

What is Health Assured?

Health Assured was founded in 2007 and acquired in 2011 by the Done Brothers, owners of The Peninsula Group, who folded the company into their wider portfolio of HR, legal, and health and safety services.

Today, Health Assured positions itself as a wellbeing partner for organisations of all sizes.

The platform combines a traditional EAP model (telephone support line, triage, structured counselling) with digital self-serve tools through the Wisdom app. Its services span mental health counselling, legal information, financial advice and digital wellbeing programmes. Health Assured’s customers include HR directors and managers at mid-to-large enterprises, public sector organisations (NHS trusts, local councils, universities), and SMEs looking to outsource employee wellbeing support at scale.

Health Assured Review: How it Works & Key Features

24/7 Confidential Support Line: access to counsellors, legal advisors, and financial specialists.

The support line is Health Assured’s core offering. Staffed by qualified, in-house counsellors, it runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Employees call a toll-free number, speak with a professional who conducts triage, and receive in the moment telephone support and practical guidance.

Employees can also reach in-house legal and financial specialists through the support line. Legal advice covers consumer rights, family law, personal injury, landlord and tenant disputes, immigration, and wills and probate. Financial guidance includes budgeting, debt management, mortgage advice, and negotiating with creditors.

The multi-disciplinary approach means a single call can address emotional distress and a practical legal or financial issue in the same conversation. The service extends to employees’ partners (including couples counselling) and dependents aged 16–24. The support line also includes a risk protocol: if a counsellor identifies immediate risk of harm, they can contact emergency services.

If an employee needs further support after the initial call, the counsellor can arrange structured short-term counselling (face-to-face, telephone, or video) or refer them to online Cognitive Behavioural Therapy programmes.

Wisdom App: A digital platform with mood tracking, health plans, live chat, and multimedia content.

The Wisdom app (formerly My Healthy Advantage) is Health Assured’s digital platform, available on iOS, Android, and desktop. Employees register using an access code from their employer and get a personalised content feed based on their interests and goals.

Key features include an interactive mood tracker with “Mood Streaks” that gamify daily emotional check-ins using haptic feedback and heartbeat animations. Mini health checks provide quick one-minute assessments that point users to relevant resources. Four-week health plans offer structured programmes for goals like quitting smoking, improving sleep, or eating healthier.

For direct support, the app includes live chat with trained counsellors available 24/7, plus video calling. The content library features guided meditations, breathing exercises, sleep soundscapes, yoga and fitness videos, podcasts, and healthy recipes. The app syncs with native health trackers (Apple Health, Google Fit) for steps, sleep, and water intake data, and includes leaderboards that add a social competition element.

The app includes “Wisdom AI,” a search tool that answers health and wellbeing questions on the spot. It also offers built-in perks and discounts.

Structured Counselling and Digital Therapy: Short-term therapy and specialised online CBT programmes.

Health Assured’s structured counselling often uses Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). After initial triage via the support line, employees who need ongoing support receive a clinical assessment to determine the best form of help.

Each employee then gets a counsellor for regular sessions, typically capped at 6 per issue, with higher-tier plans offering up to 10 or 12. Sessions can take place via telephone, video call, or in person, depending on preference and availability. If the allocated sessions run out, employees may be directed toward longer-term resources such as their GP or specialist mental health services.

On the digital therapy side, Health Assured partners with SilverCloud, which provides self-guided CBT across 30+ programmes covering stress, sleep, money worries, chronic pain, and diabetes. Rightsteps offers CBT-based menopause support. Power to Recover is a trauma programme. Employees typically access these after a clinical assessment confirms suitability.

Pricing and Contract Structure: Tiered plans with long-term commitments.

Health Assured offers three EAP packages, with advertised pricing quoted on a 5-year (60-month) term for organisations with 100+ employees. Exact pricing requires a custom quote, but the packages include:

Complete:

– 24/7/365 confidential support line
– Counselling sessions (6 or 8, depending on configuration)
– Access to the Wisdom app

Peak:

– Everything in Complete
– Up to 10 counselling sessions

Wisdom Super Care:

All prices are plus VAT. Organisations with different headcounts or contract preferences should request a custom quote. There is no free plan or self-serve trial, though Health Assured offers free demos.

Where Health Assured Falls Short

While Health Assured provides a traditional EAP with broad coverage, several limitations emerge when you examine how the service works in practice..

Triage Adds Steps Before Access: Health Assured’s model requires employees to go through an initial assessment before accessing structured therapy. Providers frame this as a clinical safeguard that matches people to appropriate support; the practical trade-off is added steps before a first session. Industry-wide, utilisation of traditional EAPs is low: only 2.6% of eligible UK employees contacted their EAP in 2022, and just 1.8% were offered counselling. Where an issue falls outside the EAP’s contracted scope, the employee is signposted to external services. Employees who want to browse and choose their own practitioner cannot do so.

Limited Coverage Scope: Health Assured’s counselling focuses on general mental health, legal information, and financial guidance. Employees dealing with neurodiversity, career development, nutrition, addiction, physiotherapy, or family dynamics may find these fall outside the service’s scope. This matters in the UK, where legal claims relating to inadequate menopause and neurodiversity workplace support are rising, areas that traditional EAPs were not built to address. Health Assured does offer a CBT-based menopause module through Rightsteps, but this is a self-guided digital programme, not access to a specialist for 1:1 sessions.

Long-Term Contract Pricing: The advertised pricing is quoted on 5-year terms with a minimum of 100 employees. The pricing page shows no month-to-month or pay-as-you-go option, which is a consideration for growing companies, organisations with fluctuating headcounts, or those wanting to pilot a wellbeing benefit before committing.

Session Caps and the Depth of Care Question: Structured counselling is capped at 6 to 12 sessions depending on the plan. Once sessions run out, the employee is discharged whether or not their issue is resolved. For employees with complex or chronic mental health challenges, this short-term model may not go deep enough. They must then find longer-term care on their own (their GP, the NHS waiting list, or private therapy at their own expense), losing the relationship with the counsellor they’d been working with.

Trust and Accreditation: In 2024, a BBC investigation alleged that Health Assured allowed corporate clients to listen in on confidential support line calls without caller consent, and that staff were pressured to limit counselling referrals. Health Assured’s CEO denied the allegations, calling them a mischaracterisation of standard call-auditing processes. The BACP temporarily suspended Health Assured’s organisational accreditation while it reviewed the claims; accreditation is currently in place. EAPA UK opened its own review.

In March 2026, Health & Protection reported that EAPA UK had concluded its investigation, finding that a few aspects of the conduct described fell short of its Code of Ethics on confidentiality and informed consent. EAPA did not name the provider in its statement. It took no formal action beyond requesting a further independent external audit of clinical governance and operational processes, said it did not intend further action subject to that review’s findings, and noted the provider had engaged constructively throughout. Health Assured did not dispute the conclusions, saying it had been proactively pushing for the external audit and had reviewed and updated its protocols and internal procedures.

Health Assured’s service-user ratings are strong, at 4.7 out of 5 across more than 1,600 Trustpilot reviews and 4.8 out of 5 across around 1,300 Google reviews (both accessed 13 August 2026).

Limited Employee Choice: In Health Assured’s model, employees don’t browse a directory of practitioners or select someone by specialty, language, or personal fit. The system allocates a counsellor after the clinical assessment. Employees receive whichever counsellor is assigned to them rather than choosing who they work with.

These limitations aren’t oversights. They follow from a model designed for scale and cost efficiency across large workforces. But they leave a gap for organisations that prioritise employee choice, broader coverage, flexible pricing, and higher engagement with their wellbeing benefit.

Top Health Assured Alternative: Kara Connect

Kara Connect takes a different approach to the engagement, access, and trust problems in Health Assured’s model. Founded in Iceland in 2015 by Thorbjorg Helga Vigfusdottir, a psychologist and former city councillor in Reykjavik, the platform originally connected children in rural Icelandic communities with speech and language therapists online. What began as a telehealth solution for access gaps pivoted to the corporate wellbeing space, using its existing digital infrastructure and security credentials to serve organisations across the Nordics, UK, and Ireland.

Kara Connect’s argument is simple: every employee can book directly. Where a traditional EAP routes employees through an assessment before they are allocated a counsellor, Kara Connect gives every employee direct access to the practitioner they choose. No triage, no assessment step before the first session.

Customised Wellbeing Hubs: A curated marketplace where employees choose their own practitioner, no triage required.

Kara Connect’s core product for employers is the “Wellbeing Hub,” a branded, customised marketplace that gives employees direct access to a curated directory of practitioners. Each company hub features 40–70 selected professionals from Kara Connect’s network of about 3,000 vetted practitioners, tailored to the company’s workforce. A blue-collar construction firm will have a different hub configuration from a white-collar technology company.

Rather than calling a support line and being assessed, employees log in, browse the directory, filter by specialty, language, and availability, and book a session directly with the practitioner of their choice. Sessions run online or in person at the practitioner’s practice or clinic. For employees who prefer a guided path, Kara Connect’s AI-powered recommendation tool, Mosi, suggests three practitioners with match scores based on the employee’s issue, preferences, and language (though employees can always skip it and browse on their own).

Because there is no triage step, the employee’s first conversation is with the actual practitioner who will support them. They tell their story once, to the person who will help them, from the first contact, rather than explaining their situation to a triage counsellor and then repeating it to the assigned therapist. Kara Connect guarantees session availability within 48 hours, and in many cases employees can book for the same day or next day.

The network covers over 60 specialty areas across five wellbeing pillars, and this is where the difference from Health Assured becomes concrete. Beyond mental health counselling, Kara Connect provides bookable 1:1 specialists in areas a generalist short-term counselling model does not provide: neurodiversity, career coaching and professional development, nutrition and dietetics, physiotherapy and pain management, addiction and substance use, speech therapy, LGBTQI+ support, parenting and family dynamics, fertility counselling, and financial coaching. Practitioners are available in 30+ languages, and these are native speakers who deliver therapy in the employee’s language, not an interpreter-relayed translation service.

Each Wellbeing Hub is white-labelled with the employer’s branding, logos, and descriptions, so it feels like an internal company benefit rather than an external service. Employees can share their session credits with family members aged 16 and over (at the employer’s discretion), and employees who already have a therapist they trust can request to add their existing practitioner to the platform.

Clinical Quality & Outcomes: Validated measurement tools, not vanity metrics.

Kara Connect integrates the WHO-5 Well-being Index (a clinically validated World Health Organisation instrument) as a confidential self-assessment module. Employees track their wellbeing over time, with results staying confidential. If they choose, they can share results with their practitioner for more targeted support. At the organisational level, aggregated and anonymised WHO-5 data gives employers insight into wellbeing trends across the workforce without identifying individuals. Unlike proprietary mood trackers (such as those in Health Assured’s Wisdom app), the WHO-5 carries established clinical credibility.

After each session, users give anonymous feedback through the ARM-5 mechanism, which measures therapeutic alliance (the quality of the relationship between user and practitioner). This metric correlates with treatment outcomes, giving Kara Connect quality assurance grounded in evidence rather than satisfaction surveys.

Critical Incident & Trauma Response: From crisis intervention to sustained support.

Kara Connect offers trauma response. The platform assembles specialist trauma teams tailored to specific industries, briefing practitioners on the type of work and trauma they may encounter. The response covers both group talks for the affected team and individual 1:1 sessions for employees who need deeper support. The same practitioner who delivered the group response can remain available through the Wellbeing Hub for ongoing sessions, so employees get continuity of care rather than a one-off intervention.

Confidentiality-First Architecture: Employee data is structurally separated from employers.

Kara Connect prioritises confidentiality, with standard exceptions required by law (such as mandatory abuse reporting or imminent risk of harm). Employers receive only anonymised, aggregated reports covering usage metrics and wellbeing trends. Reports never identify individual employees.

The platform maintains a public trust centre showing all compliance certifications, including ISO 27001, GDPR compliance, and NORDEC accreditation. It is used by the Icelandic government and EU agencies.

All video sessions run through a secure, built-in video conferencing tool with no reliance on external software like Teams or Zoom, using end-to-end encryption (DTLS/SRTP via WebRTC peer-to-peer connections). Each professional operates within an encrypted Professional Digital Workstation (a data-siloed environment where sessions, clinical notes, and documentation are managed in isolation from other practitioners and employers). Personally identifiable information is encrypted using AES, and primary data is hosted on EU-based servers (AWS in Germany). The platform does not record sessions.

This separation means employees can seek help for sensitive issues (workplace conflicts, personal challenges) knowing their employer will not see the details.

Workplace Integration: SSO, Microsoft Teams, and fast onboarding.

Kara Connect integrates with existing corporate infrastructure through Single Sign-On via Microsoft Active Directory (Entra ID) and Google Workspace, allowing employees to access the Wellbeing Hub with their existing credentials. An approved Microsoft Teams integration lets employees access the Hub from within Teams.

For organisations with flexible workforces (contractors, part-time staff, field workers without company email), Kara Connect supports email whitelisting, letting HR managers control platform access and remove leavers.

Kara Connect’s Customer Success team handles the setup, including onboarding sessions, a customisation phase for the Hub, a training demo for HR, and employee rollout sessions to introduce the benefit and show employees how to claim their credits.

Kara Connect Pricing: Flexible and transparent.

Custom Monthly Plans (contact for pricing):

– Custom Wellbeing Hubs with your branding and curated practitioner selection
– Usage analytics, wellbeing reporting, and WHO-5 organisational insights
– Customer Success Manager
– Onboarding and employee rollout sessions
– Critical incident and trauma response

Kara Connect is a premium investment compared to traditional EAPs. But the math is simple: where fewer than three in a hundred employees contact a traditional EAP in a year, Kara Connect reports overall engagement around 23%, with 15%+ booking 1:1 sessions, which means the benefit reaches employees and delivers measurable outcomes.

Companies set a credit allocation per employee (e.g., three or six sessions). When an employee’s credits run out but ongoing support is clinically warranted, practitioners or employees can request additional company-funded sessions by submitting a clinical rationale, without disclosing the employee’s identity to the employer. For employees who use all their company-sponsored credits, the platform allows a transition to personal payment via Kara Pay, so they can keep seeing the same practitioner without interruption.

Final Verdict

The choice between Health Assured and Kara Connect comes down to what kind of employee wellbeing model your organisation needs, and how much it matters that employees actually use it.

Choose Health Assured if you want an all-in-one EAP that bundles mental health counselling with legal and financial advice under a single service. Its 24/7 support line, in-house clinical team, and digital tools like the Wisdom app and SilverCloud CBT programmes make it a good fit for large organisations that need around-the-clock crisis support and want multi-disciplinary advice under one roof. For public sector bodies, NHS trusts, and enterprises with stable, long-term budgets, Health Assured’s scale supports duty-of-care compliance.

Learn more about Health Assured here.

Choose Kara Connect if your priority is getting employees to actually use their wellbeing benefit, with every employee able to book without triage. With overall engagement around 23% and 15%+ booking 1:1 sessions (compared to the 1.8–2.6% utilisation typical of traditional EAPs), Kara Connect delivers a different return on investment. Employees browse a curated hub of selected professionals, choose their own practitioner across 60+ specialties (including neurodiversity, menopause, career coaching, nutrition, and addiction support that a generalist short-term counselling model does not provide), and book directly, often within 48 hours. No triage step, no need to tell their story twice. Its confidentiality architecture, public trust centre, and NORDEC accreditation give organisations concerned about clinical governance the transparency they need. Kara Connect is a premium investment, but for organisations that need their wellbeing benefit to deliver measurable results rather than sit unused, it’s a shift from box-ticking to a benefit employees actually use.

Get started with Kara Connect here.

The difference is philosophical. Health Assured follows a traditional EAP model: centralised, scaled, and designed to provide broad coverage efficiently. Kara Connect follows what it calls a Nordic Model of Care, a proactive approach where employees self-assess, browse, choose, and book on their own terms without a prior triage step. Both have merit, and the right answer depends on whether your organisation needs crisis infrastructure or a wellbeing benefit that employees will actually reach for.
